Wilkens Design Studio developed Schematic Design through Design Development for the construction of a new home in upstate New York. The program consisted of a 3 Bedroom 2 Bath home for a family of 4 and their guests - a place for weekend gataways and vacations to this beautiful part of New York state near the Ashokan Reservoir.
Surrounded by historic stone walls, the remote wooded lot offered several challenges in that both the territorial views and sloped lot were facing largely North. Placing windows to the North and maintaining an energy efficient layout was our main design strategy. Landscaping was kept to a minimum, offering tick-deterrent strategies like rockeries and vegetation along pathways and allowing for as much of the untouched wooded natural surroundings to play an important role. In an effort to condense construction time and lower costs, we explored the use of CLT, working with HolzPak LLC and designing a layout in concert with ideal standard Cross Laminated Timber dimensions.
